Hi. I'm Franco Tavella.

I'm a Biophysics PhD student at the University of Michigan in Prof. Yang's Lab. I'm an interdisciplinary researcher combining mathematical modeling, synthetic biology, and bioinformatics to understand and engineer biology.

These are some of my projects

Synthetic Cell Engineering

Despite advancements in molecular biology, recreating cellular processes in vitro remains challenging. In this review article, we discussed past and future directions of the synthetic cell field. We might be closer than we thought 😯

Cell Cycle and Cytoplasmic Density

Small changes in cytoplasmic density are normal for a cell. However, large deviations are linked to cellular death. In this research article, we explored how changes in density affect the cell cycle. Spoiler: It is very robust 💪!

Cell-free Biomanufacturing

Biological drugs are manufactured by cells. Unfortunately, cells sometimes fail to produce these drugs. In this scicomm article I discuss cell biomanufacturing and its alternatives. Cell-free systems might be the future 🔬
